Vieques is a beautiful island in Puerto Rico known for its many gorgeous beaches.

Home to Mosquito Bay, considered the brightest bioluminescent bay on the planet, Vieques makes for a delightful getaway on its own or a must-add to a broader Puerto Rico itinerary.

The Isle of Vieques lies a few miles east of the main island of Puerto Rico. It is about 21 miles long and between 3 and 5 miles wide. It’s small enough to explore in a weekend, although its beguiling beaches may tempt you to stay longer.

The Vieques National Wildlife Refuge occupies lands both on the east and the west of the island. It is considered one of the top ecologically diverse wildlife refuges in the Caribbean.

Many beaches on Vieques are undeveloped, and their pristine beauty is one of the biggest draws for visitors.

While most beaches on Vieques offer golden sands and turquoise waters, the island also boasts a few black sand beaches, with Playa Negra a must-visit for its dramatic setting.

Look for wild horses along roads and on beaches in Vieques! They are owned by locals but allowed to roam free on parts of the island.

From sailing, swimming, and snorkeling to kayaking the bioluminescent bay and tasting local cuisine (and rum!), Vieques makes for an unspoiled and relaxing Caribbean getaway.
