Best Way To Get To Vieques From San Juan

The best way to get to Vieques from San Juan is undoubtedly to fly, but you can also arrive by ferry from Ceiba, located on the main island’s east coast.

Flights to Vieques from San Juan

Flying is the quickest way to travel between San Juan and Vieques.

There are several flights each day. The flight time is 30 minutes or less, and the cost is relatively modest.

If you plan to travel straight to Vieques from mainland USA, you can book a connecting flight from San Juan Airport.

If, on the other hand, you plan to spend a few days in San Juan, you can catch an inter-island flight from Isla Grande Airport (or from Ceiba Airport).

If you are traveling as a group, you can even consider an air charter!

Ferry to Vieques from San Juan

The ferry is a budget-friendly way to travel between San Juan and Vieques, although ferries do not depart directly from San Juan, making them a less direct and convenient option for getting to Vieques.

Ferries to Vieques depart from the port at Ceiba, a town on Puerto Rico’s eact coast about a 70-minute drive from San Juan in normal traffic.

The ferry ride from Ceiba to Vieques takes about 30 minutes. Ferries depart several times a day, although schedules may be adversely impacted by weather.

You can buy your ferry tickets online ahead of your trip.

If you have a rental car on the main island of Puerto Rico, you will likely not be permitted to take it to Vieques. You will have to park it in the parking lot at the ferry terminal for the duration of your visit to Vieques.

If you don’t have a rental car, you can take a shuttle from San Juan to Ceiba (and back).
