The black sand beach in Vieques is without a doubt one of the island’s top attractions.

Playa Negra, or Playa Negrita, as the black sand beach on Vieques is called, has a spectacular setting backed by dramatic cliffs.

On an island known for its many beautiful beaches, Playa Negra is unique.

Puerto Rico has a few black sand beaches, but Playa Negra in Vieques is the darkest. Volcanic material washed down during rains from nearby Monte Pirata.

While the sand on the black sand beach in Vieques is not entirely black, you will see areas of black sand interspersed with the more traditional gold sand.

Swimming is not recommended at Playa Negra, but you can stroll on the sand, admire the scenery, and snap photos.

How to Get to Black Sand Beach Vieques

The black sand beach on Vieques is located on the island’s south shore, a short drive from the town of Esperanza.

Driving is the quickest and most convenient way to arrive, but you can also take a taxi or publico (van).

Some visitors walk to Playa Negra from Esperanza, but it’s a long walk along narrow public roads.

Once you park or get dropped off, getting to Playa Negra requires a 10- to 15-minute walk through tropical vegetation. The path through the forest is usually well maintained, but can be muddy during rains.
